Pretty or Chocolate?

A cake auction at work will be held next week, and I'd really like to bake something. A cake, cheesecake, brownies, really any dessert is acceptable.

Thanks to Martha Stewart, I found two desserts I adore. One reason is because of the appearance, the other, purely because it's chocolate. Check out my favorites:

1) Ruffle Tower Cake 2) Chocolate Roulade

Chocolate Truffle Layer Cake

I am in love with this cake!

First of all, it's chocolate. Second, if it contains the word "truffle" (chocolate truffle), I am automatically in love. Third, if your name is Truffle, I love you! Fourth, I just want to make this cake and gobble it all up by myself. No sharing! Lastly, I know this picture isn't good, but, you get the point:

The recipe is very long, and very detailed, but if you want it, you can find it here.

Flag Cake by Serious Eats

Memorial Day is just around the corner, and I must try this recipe. I found it on Serious Eats, and it's the most unique cake I have ever seen. I can't imagine how you could make the inside of a cake look like that. Check it out for yourself:

strawberry shortcake

I could almost lick my monitor after seeing these strawberry shortcake images over on La Fuji Mama's Website. Since strawberries are my favorite fruit, and I love desserts, then this is the perfect combo for me. Not only did they prepare a delicious dessert, but appealing to the eye, as well. Yum!

Check out the extra layer of strawberry goodness in the middle.

polka dot cake by country living

"Oh, the fun with pastry bags." That's what I always think when I read cake decorating instructions that call for the good ole pastry bag. I can still remember the days of my youth when I tried to get crafty with the pastry bag, and in the end, somehow, the icing wiggled its way out of the back of the bag and all over my hands. But... I think I might try my hand at it again soon, though I will be using the Pampered Chef Decorator Bottle Set!

I want to try some simple cake decorating, and what is more simple than frosting dots, right? When I saw this picture in the Country Living photo gallery, I thought this would be a good place for me to start. Not to mention that Country Living has some cake decorating tutorials which I hope will help me out in the future.

Take a look at what I have in mind...
